Erlanger rhythmic gymnast Danielle Blakeney won five medals including the all-around gold today at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece. Her all-around score of 27.661 was 1.168 ahead of silver medallist Rebecca Preston of Australia. Blakeney also won gold in the ribbon (6.694) and ball (6.881) to go with a silver in the rope (6.950) and bronze in the clubs (7.138).
At the track today, Georgetown’s Ryan Barts and his Team USA 4x100-meter relay team came up just short in Barts’ first opportunity at a medal. Their time of 0:49.52 was 1.7 seconds behind the bronze medallists from Jamaica. Saudi Arabia won the gold in the heat with a time of 0:45.11.
Kentucky’s five athletes have now won 14 medals at these games, including seven gold medals. Of that count, 10 have come in the artistic and rhythmic gymnastics disciplines, including six gold medals.
Tomorrow at the Games
Competition comes to an end at the Games tomorrow, with two Kentucky athletes in action.
Bowling Singles gold medallist Josh Alexander will have a chance to increase his medal count when he bowls in the Team (four person) event. Barts will have two medal opportunities tomorrow, running in the 100-meter dash final and competing in the long jump final.
The Games conclude with a Closing Ceremony on July 4.
The athletes will return to Kentucky on Wednesday, July 6. They will fly into Blue Grass Airport in Lexington at 2:10 pm.
