Louisville City FC Set to Face Off Against Union Omaha at Lynn Family Stadium

After weeks of practice, the Louisville City FC Unified team that was introduced in May will play its first match on Saturday, Aug. 29. The SOKY-Louisville City collaboration will host Union Omaha at 11 am at Lynn Family Stadium – home of Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville. Admission and parking for the game are free.

The core of the Union Omaha side is coming off a spectacular performance at the USA Games, where they went 5-0 representing Special Olympics Nebraska and claimed the gold medal in their division. They outscored opponents 10-4 in Minneapolis.

“Since June, Coach Jeremy (Mercer) and I have watched this group quickly grow, both as soccer players and as teammates,” head coach Matt McGoron said. “It’s been rewarding to see leaders emerge, teammates support one another, and the group discover that they can compete hard, have fun, and celebrate each other’s success. The growth in communication, confidence, and teamwork has been remarkable and has made our job as coaches incredibly rewarding.

“I’m honored to be part of Kentucky’s first Unified Soccer team and grateful for how the players have welcomed me in my first season as a Unified coach, McGoron continued. “Launching this team is an important milestone, and our inaugural match against Omaha Union on Aug. 29 represents another exciting step as we build toward our long-term goal of sending a Kentucky Unified Soccer team to the 2030 Special Olympics USA Games.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to step onto the field for this historic match and proudly wear the Louisville City FC jersey alongside my incredible and hardworking teammates,” said Special Olympics Kentucky athlete Anna Murray. “Being part of Kentucky’s first ever Unified Special Olympics soccer team is an amazing honor, and I’m grateful and so blessed to represent inclusion, teamwork, and the game we all love.”

As part of Union Omaha’s visit to Louisville, the teams will have a meal together on Saturday and both teams will attend that night’s Louisville City FC match against Detroit City FC which starts at 8 pm.

Gates open at Lynn Family Stadium for the Unified soccer match at 10 am. Parking is in the Purple Lot.
