SOKY Coronavirus Update – May 14
Special Olympics Kentucky has continued to closely monitor the evolving situation with coronavirus (COVID-19), including information updated by Governor Andy Beshear. In keeping with the guidance from the Governor’s office on the phased reopening of the state, Special Olympics Kentucky is extending the suspension of all Special Olympics Activities – including sports training and competition and social activities – through June 15, 2020. This means all practices, local competitions and in-person social activities are to remain halted until further announcement.
The June 15 date mirrors the state directive for the possibility of the return of “low contact” youth sports. Currently, we are seeking guidance from the state on what constitutes low contact sports so that we can translate those guidelines to the needs of our program. We anticipate that our return to competition will be phased in slowly in much the same way as the state’s reopening is being phased in. And athletes and coaches should expect there to be additional restrictions on participation in cases of physical conditions which would make them more vulnerable to the disease.
This continues to be a developing health concern, and while we are all excited to get back to the sports we love, the health and safety of our athletes, volunteers, staff, and partners remains our top priority. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this constantly changing environment and strive to make the best possible decisions with the safety and well-being of our athletes and all constituents at the forefront.
