AS (Additional Staff) perform a number of important duties not only during the Games, but also in the massive effort that goes into preparing for the Games. AS Coaches will help with medical needs, chaperone duties, administrative work and even laundry to keep Team Kentucky looking great on the field or in the pool. They have one of the most important — and least glamorous — in the Team Kentucky effort.

Kim Satterwhite Kim Satterwhite, the Special Olympics Kentucky Vice President of Programs, will serve as the Team Kentucky Head of Delegation. While this is her first USA Games in that role, she is not a stranger to USA Games competitions. She served as the Team Kentucky Assistant Head of Delegation at the 2010 and 2006 Special Olympics USA Games. The Frankfort resident has been with Special Olympics Kentucky state office for 17 years and served as a volunteer prior to that. This will be her third major Special Olympics competition. She also served as an AS Coach for Team USA for the 2003 World Summer Games in Dublin,Ireland.

Mark Buerger Mark Buerger, the Communications Director for Special Olympics Kentucky, will serve as the AS Coach responsible for Media Services for Team Kentucky. Buerger will handle photography, video, web updates and updates to local Kentucky media for all athletes during the Games. This will be Buerger’s third trip to the USA Games and second as an official member of the Team Kentucky delegation. He served in the same capacity at both the 2006 and 2010 USA Games, serving as an AS Coach in 2010. Buerger, who has been on the Special Olympics Staff for 12 years is a Northern Kentucky native and now resides in Lexington

Jeff Corder Longtime Special Olympics Kentucky volunteer Jeff Corder of Bowling Green will serve as the AS Coach responsible for Team Kentucky’s medical care and preparations. Corder has worked with Special Olympics for 16 years as a part of the Kentucky Special Events Medical Team that provides emergency medical services at all Special Olympics Kentucky competitions. He will be responsible for treatment and health evaluations for the entire Team Kentucky delegation. This will be Corder’s second consecutive trip to the Special Olympics USA Games, he was also the medical AS Coach at the 2010 Games in Lincoln, Neb.

Julie Coon Julie Coon, of Harrodsburg, will be making her first trip to a Special Olympics Competition as an AS Coach, but it is far from her first major Special Olympics competition. Coon, a team member at Dana Corp., has been part of Team Kentucky or Team USA coaching staffs for Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. Coon, who manages the Equestrian program for Special Olympics Kentucky, most recently served as the Head Equestrian Coach for Team USA at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.

Melissa Hardison Melissa Hardison of Frankfort is a member of the Special Olympics Kentucky State Office Staff, serving as the Senior Field Services Director for the program. Her involvement with Special Olympics, however, goes back farther than her role with the State Office. She has long been involved in the program both as a former Special Education teacher in the Franklin County School System and as a volunteer. Her brother John is a Special Olympics athlete. Hardison also served as an AS Coach for the 2006 Special Olympics USA National Games in Ames, Iowa.

Erin Young Erin Young will serve as an Administrative Coach with Team Kentucky for the first time. Young has been on the Special Olympics staff as the Program Director for Team Sports for four years, overseeing basketball, softball and soccer. A Frankfort native, Young now resides in Louisville.
