After more than 20 years as a Special Olympics coach, official and fundraiser, Kenny Merritt of Mount Vernon will be making his first trip to a competition above the State level. Merritt, who has been honored by his employer Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky several times for his work with Special Olympics, will serve as the Head Golf Coach for Team Kentucky in Lincoln. Merritt regularly volunteers at Special Olympics competitions throughout the year including the State Basketball, Softball and Bowling Tournaments as well as the annual State Summer Games.
Athletes
Christy Farwell of Alexandria will compete in the Individual Stroke Play competition as part of Kentucky’s golf delegation at the 2010 National Games. She was also a part of that 2006 National Games track and field team and shared a Bronze Medal in the 4×100-meter relay. An employee of St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Farwell, 23, also earned a Silver Medal in the shot put in 2006. She has been a Special Olympics athlete for 8 years and began golfing just two years ago.
Jeremy Thompson, 21, of Lexington will play in the Unified Team Alternate Shot event with his partner Kevin Parnell of Centerfield, Ohio. Thompson, who works at Movie Tavern in Lexington, competed in track and field at the 2006 USA National Games, winning two bronze medals. One of those Bronze MEdals came on a relay team with Farwell. Thompson has been a Special Olympics athlete for 14 years and has played golf for four. He also competes in track and field, alpine skiing, basketball, bowling, soccer and softball
