It’s Time for Summer Sports Season
The hot and humid days of July are here and for Special Olympics athletes across the state, that means one thing – Summer Sports Season! The Special Olympics Kentucky Summer Sports Season consists of softball and golf, and July is when both sports really start to hit their strides.
Softball leagues are now underway in both Georgetown and Louisville, with teams in other parts of the state holding scrimmages to get ready for tournament season. Every team will compete in one Regional Tournament in August all with the hope of advancing to the State Tournament in Bowling Green in September. Teams that don’t qualify for the State Tournament have the option of competing in the Team Skills Competition which is held in conjunction with the Tournament.
2022 Softball Schedule
Aug. 6 – Region 1 Softball Tournament; Lone Oak Park, Paducah
Aug. 12-13 – Region 2 Softball Tournament; Marshall Park, Georgetown
Aug. 19-20 – Region 3 Softball Tournament; Lyndon Recreation Complex, Louisville
Sept. 9-11 – State Softball Tournament; Michael O. Buchanon Park, Bowling Green
Golfers start their tournament play this month with regional events in Northern Kentucky, Elizabethtown and Murray. Every golfer and Unified team must play in at least one regional event to qualify for the State Golf Tournament that will be held at Quail Chase Golf Course in Louisville in August. Our golf season offers play in three skill levels: Individual Skills, which measures an individual’s ability to hit six different golf shots with a score assigned to each result; 9-Hole Unified Alternate Shot, which pairs a Special Olympics athlete with a partner who does not have an intellectual disability to practice and compete; and 9-Hole Individual Stroke Play, where each player plays their own ball throughout the round.
