Summer Sports Season Hits Championship Stretch

Summer Sports Golf, Softball Approach State Tournaments

Eric DuncansonAs summer winds to a close Special Olympics Kentucky summer sports golf and softball seasons are headed into their championship runs.

Golfers have completed the regional tournament portion of that season’s schedule — which included events in Murray, Louisville and Independence. They are now practicing for the State Golf Tournament, which will take place on Sunday, August 13, at the Lindsey Golf Course on Fort Knox. This is the  10th consecutive year that the course has hosted the event. More than 100 Special Olympics golfers — including Team Kentucky golf selections Jude Zilliox and the Unified team of Wake Mullins and Dennis Gaines — are expected to compete.

Nearly 1,000 athletes on a record 71 teams statewide are getting ready to compete for a spot at the State Softball Tournament as their season heads to the regional tournament stage. Three regional events are scheduled. The Region 2 Softball Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, August 11 & 12, at Marshall Park in Georgetown. The Region 1 Tournament will take place August 19 at Lone Oak Park in Paducah. The Region 3 Tournament will be held August 25 and 26 at Lyndon Recreation Complex in Louisville.

About half of the teams will qualify to compete at the State Softball Tournament, which will be held September 8-10. It will once again be hosted at Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green. All teams not qualifying for the State Tournament are invited to participate in the Team Skills Competition that is held on the Saturday of the State Tournament. The Team Skill Competition gives all of our softball teams and players an opportunity to  enjoy state tournament weekend.
