Carried by members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Kentucky, the Special Olympics “Flame of Hope” will make several stops throughout the state on its way to the State Summer Games Opening Ceremonies. The stops are all part of the 2024 Final Leg, which opens the Summer Games festivities every year.

Activities get underway on Wednesday, May 28, in Elizabethtown. Their run will begin at 9 am at The Cecilian Bank on Litchfield Rd. and end at the Elizabethtown Police Department. Runs continue on Thursday, May 29, with a run that begins at 9 am at Kentucky State Police Post 3. There are two runs on Thursday, May 30. The Louisville run will start at 9 am at the Police Memorial on South 6th St. and end at the Great Lawn in Waterfront Park. That will be followed by a run in Bullitt County from the Bullitt County Courthouse that begins at 1 pm.

The “Flame of Hope” will make its final journey to the Summer Games on Friday, May 31. That day begins at 9 am with a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda and a lighting on the Capitol steps. Law Enforcement officers from around the state will then carry the torch down Capitol Ave. Officers will then bus to Nicholasville to run a leg that begins at the Nicholasville Police Department at 11 am. Two legs in Lexington follow Nicholasville. The first begins at 1:30 at the Old Morrison Building on the Transylvania University campus and will run to the Fayette County Courthouse. There will be a ceremony at the Courthouse before the torch continues to the Wildcat Statue on the University of Kentucky campus.

Finally, the “Flame of Hope” will arrive in Richmond for a leg that will start at the Richmond Police Department at 3:30 pm. Runners will take the torch from there into the Eastern Kentucky University campus. Finally, officers will present the torch with the help of a Special Olympics athlete for the cauldron lighting at the Summer Games Opening Ceremonies, which start at 6 pm in The Ravine.
