Mullins and Gaines Have Perfect Finish to Golf Competition

The Unified golf pairing of Lexington’s Wake Mullins and Dennis Gaines got off to a hot start today with a par on their first hole and an early birdie, but it will be the finish of their final round at the World Summer Games that they will probably remember most from these Games. With Mullins moving to individual play for the upcoming Special Olympics Kentucky golf season, they came to Bad Saarow’s ninth hole knowing that it was likely their last competitive hole as a Special Olympics Unified team. Mullins, who is a notoriously big hitter off the tee, smashed his final tee shot of the Games. Gaines followed by knocking his  approach on the green, and Mullins walked up and calmly knocked in the putt for birdie. They finished with a 43 on the front nine – their best of the tournament and a 90 for the day.

Their four-day score of 356 kept them in the Bronze Medal slot, 15 shots behind Silver Medalists Frederik Bech and partner Thomas Andresen of Denmark. Americans Pryce Holcombe and Les Holcombe of Alabama took the Gold.

The Rest of the World Summer Games…

All of Kentucky’s athletes at the World Summer Games have completed their competition. Special Olympics USA Head Swimming Coach Debbie Ogden of Fort Wright has swimmers vying for medals each of the next two days. Head Special Olympics USA Gymnastics Coach Mary Fehrenbach of Versailles had today off, but returns to competition tomorrow with her artistic gymnastics athletes.

The Games come to an end on Sunday evening with a huge outdoor closing ceremony, celebration and dance at Berlin’s famous Brandenburg Gate.

Most of the Kentucky delegation will return home on Monday. Their flight lands in Lexington at 10:50 pm.
